1890s School House Slate / Blackboard - Snow Scene Painting

Found in Virginia several years ago, this charming naive painting on an old framed school slate measures 14 1/2" wide x 10 1/4" high. It dates to the late 1890s-1900, when painting on wooden bowls, slates and such was a popular pastime.

The paint is quite textured on the snow, trees, and roof of the barn ...less so on the water and sky. Mica flecks in the snowy areas give an icy sparkle. Notice the smattering of clouds and the waning winter sun in the sky!

The front of the slate's frame was painted black at some point but is still the natural color on the back. The back side of the slate itself is also unpainted and could still be used to write on. There is a saw-tooth hanger attached for hanging. The frame is wood and is put together with dovetail joins.

As seen in the photos, there are some nicks, dings and scratches to the paint. There's a small chip in the slate in the bottom left corner (photo 3).
