Miniature Painting of Napoleon by Daniel Saint (1778-1847) 1803

Extremely rare miniature painting on ivory depicting Napoleon Bonaparte done by a French master miniature painter Daniel Saint. In original bronze frame. Signed and dated 1803 on the right side.

Very good condition. Two small cracks on the top and the right side. None of the cracks intrude into the painting area. The crack on the top is 10 mm long, and the crack on the right side is 15 mm long. Those two imperfections are shown on the pictures.

Daniel Saint is considered one of the greatest miniaturists of the French XIX century. Born in Saint-Lô in 1778 . He was a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Regnault (School of David) and of Augustine and Aubry. He crated ​​many portraits of the Bonaparte family (Empress Josephine, Napoleon I, Queen Hortense), the rulers of the Restoration ( Prince Eugene ) and the July Monarchy ( Charles X ). He returned to Saint-Lô in 1842 where he died in 1847. The Museum of Fine Arts in the city has a few copies of his works.
