Sterling Silver c.1860s British Raj India Shiva Locket Brooch

This is an unmarked (tested) sterling silver locket back brooch hailing from India during the early British Raj period, circa 1860s. The front of the brooch portrays the Indian god Shiva, flanked by a monkey on the left and a smaller human figure on the right. The figures are in raised relief against a textured background. Shiva is a major Hindu deity meaning "Auspicious one". In this image of Shiva he is dancing. The back of the brooch has a small glass covered locket compartment. This can be gently pulled out and a memento of your choice inserted under the glass. It has a T hinged pin stem and simple C clasp.

The brooch weighs 11.4 gr. It measures 1.25" x 1.5".

Condition is generally good, with expected patina and minor aged related wear.

This brooch portrays an unusual image from an important time and period of history. Fascinating!
