This is a fine antique French automaton featuring an ethnic black minstrel or troubadour who strums an instrument and turns the head as the music plays. This automaton is in working condition. I can provide the link to a Youtube video of it in action upon request. The bisque head is marked F3G for Francois Gaultier size 3 head. There is no damage to the bisque head. The hands are also bisque and the doll's left index finger is broken off - see photos. He or she has dark brown glass eyes, a black mohair wig, and small white glass earrings.
It has been suggested to me that the clothing may be a very old and skillfully made replacement, but I will leave that judgement up to the viewer. He or she is dressed in pink silk satin with a woven stripe for the pleated trousers that come to just below the knee, cape with sleeve caps and gold bullion ball fringe trim, and cap with bow in front. There is a cream satin blouse underneath with ruff of lace down the front and trimming the cuffs. A brocade vest completes the outfit. The black stockings and shoes do appear to be original, as is the dark red velvet covering over the box base that holds the mechanism.
The automaton measures 16" total height. The doll alone is about 13" tall. The box base measures 3" tall by 6" x 6".
I highly recommend Express shipping for this delicate antique.
