This is an excellent 20" tall antique papier mache shoulder head doll bearing the 1872 patent label of Ludwig Greiner of Philadelphia, PA. Greiner's 1858 patent is the earliest known US doll patent on record. In 1872 he applied for and received an extension of his patent rights. This doll bears the paper label of the 1872 patent. The doll has her original intact sturdy stuffed cloth body with leather lower arms. Her clothing is also original and consists of white cotton undergarments; chemise, pantaloons, stockings and 2 petticoats; topped by a brown and orange plaid linen & wool blend skirt and top with brown glass buttons.
Condition: For a doll of this type and of this age condition is good and originality is remarkable. She does have a rub to the tip of her nose. Her face is a bit dirty and I have not attempted to clean it. She is missing shoes. The fabric of her skirt and top is beginning to shatter and has splits. Her undergarments are yellowed with age. No one has spruced her up. She is just as she was when a child played with her in the 1870s.
If you prize originality, this doll is a rare winner.
