This is a fine set of 1970s vintage sterling silver blue John stone cufflinks in original box. The inside of the box lid is signed "To Blaine Evans with kind regards from Graham Wilde May 1978". the settings are marked STERLING SILVER inside the cufflink stems.
Blue John stone (also known as Derbyshire Spar) is a form of fluorite with bands of a purple-blue and yellowish color. It is found in the UK only at Blue John Cavern and Treak Cliff Cavern at Castleton in Derbyshire. During the 19th century, it was mined for its ornamental value, and mining continues on a small scale. It is a very desirable stone in decorative jewelry.
These cufflinks weigh 8.6 gr. They measure almost .75" x .5" across the faces.
