This is a fine antique Victorian period carved shell cameo swivel brooch depicting a lady wearing a snood and earring. The setting is unmarked and tests as gold filled. The Cameo is held within a plain bezel collar that can turn within the outer setting. Typically there might have been a glass covered locket on the back side holding a decorative arrangement of hair or photograph or a loved one. This locket back has been covered with a solid lid and sealed shut. I have not been able to open it. The outer decorative frame has 2 intertwining vine forms with swags of leaves on each side. The back side has a typical brooch pin back with T hinge and C clasp.
The brooch measures 1.75" x 1.5". The cameo alone measures 1.125" x 1".
Condition: Back is sealed so contents are unknown.
The elaborate hairdo with snood, double band or wavy hair over the back, and leaves crowning the head is unusual and very well carved. This is a patrician lady or high quality.
