This is an elegant circa 1920s-1930s vintage rhinestone and early black plastic dress clip brooch. The black center does not test positive for bakelite but seems heavier than celluloid. The black material forms a smooth tapered wave. The top and bottom are framed on each side by tiers studded with rhinestones. The back is a solid plate of base metal topped by a short sturdy spring clip. There are no markings. The clip back functions well.
This clip measures 2" tall by 1.75" across at the bottom and 1.25" across at the top.
Condition: The stones have some typical darkening with age. One of the smallest stones has been replaced.
Something about this simple black smooth tapered slope and the tiers of rhinestones framing it makes me think of an elegant cocktail party with a flapper gal leaning against a piano.
