This is a fine circa 1830s -1840s wax head & wood limb 9" tall religious Madonna doll figure for church or creche. She is all original. Her head is poured wax with black bead set eyes and blond hair arranged in tightly curled horizontal rows. She has a wire armature body wrapped in linen tow fibers. Her lower arms and legs are carved wood. Her hands are very delicately carved with separate fingers and thumbs, and the right hand with forefinger and thumb touching.
She is dressed in a red wool underskirt that is lined is paper that is printed with a pastoral scene. This is topped by a cream satin overskirt trimmed with gold metallic lace and cotton lace cuffs and collar ruffle. Over her head she has a blue moire veil, also with metallic lace trim.
The glass dome shown in one photo is not included, but is available if interested. Please inquire.
Condition: There is some expected aging to the colors and the wax of the head, but all is intact. The only loss I note is to some of the decorative trim on the front of her skirt.
This beautiful Madonna is a rare survivor, having lasted about 175 years. Amazing to think that something so delicate is still intact after so long.
