Victorian 10K Aventurine Goldstone Brooch
This is a very unusual early Victorian period 10K+ brooch set with 5 darkly glittering aventurine goldstones. The brooch setting is unmarked but tests positive for gold content of at least 10K, and weakly holds the test for 14K. Each stone is held is an open backed plain bezel band with 4 bifurcated prongs. Curlicues of gold wire and round half domes of gold further accent the setting. The back has an old fashioned T hinged pin stem and simple C clasp. the stones have a black background filled with orbs of coppery glitter.
Goldstone or aventurine is a type of glittering glass made in a low-oxygen reducing atmosphere. Legend is that the method for making it was discovered by 17th century Italian monks who were dabbling in alchemy, and this was a byproduct of their attempts to create gold. This mysteriously sparkling material is also sometimes called 'stellaria' for its starry appearance.
This brooch measures 1.625" x 1.625". The round stones each measure 10mm, and the center square is 13mm x 13mm. It weighs 7.3 gr.
Condition is good.
This is quite an unique antique brooch. The subtle glitter will invite close attention, so place it carefully when you wear it.
