This is a sweet 15" tall circa 1880s German bisque shoulder head child doll with glass eyes and kid body. She is marked on the back with model number 31 and size 4. Her hair is arranged in the so-called Highland Mary manner with short curved bangs in front, parted and smooth on top, and all over snail shell shaped curls over all the rest. She has peachy skin tone, feathered eyebrows, painted top and bottom eyelashes, big blue glass eyes, and pale blond hair color.
Her kid body is original, though she has been reattached to it. It is typically aged and has some delicate areas at the joints. She has lower bisque arms. Her left hand has 3 chipped fingers that have patched repairs, and her right hand has a patched pinky finger.
Her lovely antique clothing consists of white cotton pantaloons and petticoat, silk stockings (with some holes), and beautifully made antique white cotton dress. The dress many rows of vertical pleats on each side, an eyelet lace yoke, with more eyelet lace at the neck ruffle and sleeves. The dress closes with 2 hidden buttons in back. there are a couple of light brown stains on the dress.
Condition: The shoulder head is in good condition. No chips, cracks or repairs. I see one tiny possible scratch below her left eyebrow. Body is a little delicate but all there. Chips to fingers as detailed above. Holes in stockings. A few minor stains on dress.
This model doll was not made by one of the larger better known companies such as Kestner or Alt beck & Gottschalck. The model number 31 has been associated with W. & F. Goebel, but this is still unconfirmed. The distinctive snail shell shaped curls in her hair may help link her to others. She is a remarkably sweet and uncommon child doll.
