This is a lovely pair of marked sterling silver screw back earrings depicting flying swallow birds. In Victorian times the swallow had a meaning of faithfully returning home. Supposedly the swallow was one of the first birds to land on deck when a ship was close to land. This bird was a popular motif for jewelry, as well as a favorite tattoo for sailors. These earrings are marked sterling on the tops of the screw backs.
The earrings have a combined weight of 5.1 gr. The birds measure .875" from wing tip to wing tip, and .75" from beak tip to end of tail feathers.
Condition is good.
These are a sweetly sentimental pair of nice old sterling earrings. The birds are well modeled, with out stretched wings, feather details and turned heads.
