This is a beautiful antique Victorian period shell shaped tortoise mourning locket on a Vulcanite and French black glass jet bead chain necklace. The locket is made from real tortoise shell substantially preban, dating from mid 1800s. This locket is shaped like a ribbed shell on both sides. It is hinged on the side and opens to reveal 2 glass covered compartments with purple silk lining and gold tone frame rims. It opens and closes well. The necklace has oblong Vulcanite beads and small black glass spacer beads on a linked chain. There is no clasp as the necklace is 24" around and can fit easily over the head.
Condition: The locket has a few nibbles as is common with this material. There is also a hairline crack about .5" long out from the hinge on one side, but seems stable.
This is an unusual mourning necklace. Perfect for a collection of Victorian period jewelry.
