This wonderful antique Pinchbeck or gilded brass filigree 3 tiered brooch with paste stones was originally a top to a hair ornament, but was converted during the Victorian period into a brooch. The original hinge for the hair pin can still be seen on the back of the top section, but it was fitted with an old fashioned T hinged pin stem and C clasp to turn it into a brooch. This piece is unmarked. The metal tests as a brass alloy consistent with Pinchbeck. Each section is set with 1 or more paste stones in tall conical settings. The bottom section has a hook on the back to hold one more smaller drop which is no longer present.
This brooch measures 3.5" x 1.875".
Condition: Altered from hair pin into brooch during Victorian period. One stone on top section is damaged. There is a darkened area on top of middle section where it looks like the filigree has separated from the bail on one side and someone make have tried to repair this, but it is still sturdy. Bottom section has an empty hook on the back where something else once hung.
I don't normally fancy altered pieces, but this was done so long ago I still find it worthy, and I suspect that it is quite an early piece, either early Victorian era or late Georgian period.
