This is a very attractive pair of antique circa 1900 faux tortoise shell celluloid hair combs with decorative silver plated band across the top accented with pale blue rose cut paste stones. The combs are unmarked. The body of the combs test positive for celluloid and emit a camphor like odor when warmed. The combs are rectangular with a gentle arched curve. The metal tops are base metal with a silver finish. Each comb is set with a single foil back rose cut glass or paste stone in the center of the metal band.
Each comb measures 4.25" x 2.5".
Condition is over all good. There is some deterioration of the silver plating and the foil backing behind the stones. The combs themselves are in fine condition.
These combs are excellent imitations of tortoise shell, with a lovely variegated and translucent warm brown to gold color. They will make a unique addition to your coiffure.
