This is a modern painted (by me) miniature lover's token painting of luscious lips, contained within an antique gilded sterling silver early Victorian period brooch. For centuries lovers would exchange portrait miniatures with their betrothed, but what to do if you have a secret or even illicit love? The solution was to exchange miniature paintings of just the eye or perhaps lips.
I have long dealt in antique jewelry, and thus accumulated some old empty settings. I decided to use my other skill as a painter to make some of them into 'Lover's tokens', after the Georgian and earlier fashion of exchanging such images. This particular miniature painting was done on paper using first a pencil sketch, then watercolor. The painting is contained under glass original to the brooch.
The brooch measures 2" x 2.125". the setting is unmarked. The metal content tests positive for silver content of sterling grade and has a gold wash over top. The back has its original pin stem with wide T hinge and C clasp.
Condition is good. Keep in mind that though the painting is new, all jewelry parts are old and may have some modest signs of wear in keeping with their age.
I am an active artist, but have so far not listed my art work on Ruby Lane. Consider this little piece a start, and I have a few others listed as well. Each unique painting is in a different antique setting.
