14.5" Antique c. 1840s German Papier Mache Doll w/ Braided Bun
This is a lovely example of an antique circa 1840s German papier mache shoulder head doll on her original German factory made cloth body with wooden arms. The beautiful early doll has her molded hair arranged in an elaborate braided bun. She is wearing what appears to be her original worn dress and steel bead necklace. She has a wool petticoat with red hem trim, a white cotton chemise, lacy black stockings and black velvet shoes with buckles on the toes. The only restoration I can find is a repaired crack across the back of the shoulder plate. Due to the delicate nature of the dress I have opted to not remove her clothing. This fine lady also comes with a very old box in which she has lived for a very long time. This box is not an original doll box as the French label that can be seen under the over pasted shipping label is from a clothing accessory company. I suspect that the doll conveniently fit into this box and was shipped in it long ago.

Condition as noted. Doll's shoulder plate has an old repair across the back. No repaint. Dress is very fragile and has substantial loss especially in front. Box is complete though faded and with some torn corners and other age wear.
This is a very special early papier mache shoulder head doll. This type of head is often found on the so-called milliner type kid bodies, but this cloth body is also correct.
