This is a rare circa 1930s Amsterdam Arts & Crafts enameled flower copper brooch hand made by artist Jan Van Karssen. The brooch is signed on the back ONTWERP JAN VAN KARSSEN. It is a round domed brooch with a lovely patina to the copper. The flower is thickly enameled with a white blossom with red veining at the base, green leaves accented in yellow, yellow stamens, and several green accent dots. The reverse has a simple pin stem with C clasp.
This brooch measures 2" in diameter.
Condition is overall good. The copper has a desirable heavy patina. Some of the accent dots of green or yellow enamel appear to not have fused well to the metal, and 5 dots are lacking. Not sure if this was in the making or a subsequent loss.
This brooch is a unique example of the artistic movement in Europe during the first half of the 20th century. If you appreciate the rustic nature of these hand made pieces, then this one of a kind brooch by this artist of the period may suit you well.
