Antique Japanese Cranes Cloisonne & Guilloché Enameled Brooch

This is a gorgeous antique Japanese cloisonne and guilloché enameled brooch depicting a scene of flying cranes. In Japan cranes symbolize luck, longevity and fidelity. This brooch appears to have originally been made as a buckle but was converted into a brooch during the Victorian period by removing the buckle fittings and adding a brass brooch fitting with old fashioned T hinge and C clasp. The metal body of the brooch is copper. The front is enameled with a combination of the cloisonne and guilloché techniques. The cranes and blue scalloped border are outlined by metal cloisonnes. The background of greenery and blue sky is created by texturing the metal prior to enameling in the guilloché method. The back is also guilloché enameled in light blue.

The brooch measures 1.625" in diameter.

Condition: Upon close examination several small crack lines are visible in the enameled surface, but no enameling is missing.

A great deal of skill and training was required to accomplish this small jewel. It is a tiny masterpiece of enamel work.
