1930s-40s Wood Folk Art Kentucky Poppet Doll 6.5"

This is an unusual 6.5" tall circa 1930s-1940s era example of the American Folk Art dolls known as Kentucky Poppets. She is quite a personality with bug eyes and projecting chin. This particular has a one piece carved body with arms jointed at the shoulders. One arm is bent at the elbow and the hand is carved in a fist as though to hold something. The other arm is straight and the hand is carved to hold the wire handle of a wooden bucket. This poppet is made to be an old woman and was given a white cotton wig. She is dressed in her original well made cotton clothing, including green gingham check bonnet, green print dress, and sprig printed apron with pocket and handkerchief. She has (gasp) no undergarments. Her feet were carved as heeled boots and painted black. The tips of both feet were broken off and I rebuilt them and painted them to match.

Condition is over all good, but note that the tips of the feet have been restored.

I have no written provenance on this doll. She was purchased in Virginia. The seller's story was that she was 'One of those old Folk Art dolls from the Mountain Folk down south in Kentucky'. So I can't say for certain that she originated in Kentucky, but the facial features, especially the eye treatment do recall dolls made in that region and of that era. She is actually better carved than most Kentucky poppets I have seen. She is a quaint old gal who to my eye resembles Jay Leno and I have therefore nicknamed her Mrs. Leno.
