Early 1900s Framed Memorial to Howard M. Hyatt Order of Red Men Gowongo Tribe No. 482 Star Junction PA

This is a unique framed memorial for Howard M. Hyatt, member of the Order of Red Men Gowongo Tribe No. 482 of Star Junction, Pennsylvania. The hand crafted memorial was made on black paper with lettering and emblems outlined in old tinsel glitter all centered around a shield with a hand drawn penned image of an American Indian in profile. I found a 1918 Fayette County obituary for Howard Hyatt stating: "HOWARD HYATT died of pneumonia at his home at Star Junction Tuesday, November 26, aged 30 years, one month and 26 days. He was well and favorably known throughout the vicinity of Star Junction..." The fraternal society known as the Improved Order of Red Men traces its origins back to 1765 and is descended from the Sons of Liberty. These patriots concealed their identities and worked "underground" to help establish freedom and liberty in the early Colonies. They patterned themselves after the great Iroquois Confederacy and its democratic governing body. Their system, with elected representatives to govern tribal councils, had been in existence for several centuries and still exists today. The Gowongo Tribe No. 482 is no longer listed on the current Red Men's list of local tribe organizations.

This image is housed within its original oak frame under glass. The framed size is 14.5" x 25.5". The image size is 11" x 21.75".

Condition: There is some loss to the applied glitter and some edge rubs on the frame.

I consider this piece to be a unique form of Folk Art. It is also an important genealogical artifact, and an important historical piece for the Red Men organization.
