Early 1900s Arts & Crafts Buckle Brooch w/ Amethyst Paste Stone

This is a large circa early 1900s Arts & Crafts buckle brooch that features a single large faceted amethyst colored faceted paste or glass stone. The brooch is made from purposefully patinated silver tone base metal in an Arts & Crafts design that presages the Art Deco style. There are no markings. The back has a simple sturdy pin stem and flat C clasp. The large oval faceted stone is foil back and with some degradation of the foil backing underneath.

The brooch measures 2.625" x 2.375". The stone measures 1.25" x 1".

Condition: The purposefully applied patina has aged giving it further irregularity, with the patina worn away in some areas and darker in others. This is a trait to be admired rather then cleaned away though. The stone does have some loss to the foil backing. This piece was originally fashioned to be a brooch, but the same design was also available as a buckle that came apart at the center overlap. They used the same design as a brooch by fusing at the center. The pin back is consistently of the period and is not a later addition.

This big bold brooch is perfect for the person who appreciates the rustic look of the arts & Crafts style.
