This is a unique large antique silver plated pendant decorated with a thistle design and suspended from a later hand made sterling silver necklace chain. There are no markings but the pendant test as heavy silver plate over a base metal, and the chain tests as solid sterling silver. The hand made chain is composed of 1.5" long flattened links connected by plain round links. A matching simple large hook is the clasp.
The combined weight is 49.5 gr. The pendant measures 2.125" x 3.25". The chain measures 14" on each side plus an inch for the hook clasp, plus 2" spacing for the pendant attachment, giving a total measurement for the necklace of about 31".
Condition is good. Pendant was created by modifying an antique buckle.
The elaborately decorated pendant appears to have been neatly modified from original function as one half of a buckle. Though I don't normally pick up items that were modified in this way, this particular example is so attractive that I completely understand why someone altered it so it could be worn as a necklace. Imagine you have this fantastic buckle and somehow half of it breaks or is lost, leaving you with this lovely but unwearable object. A light bulb goes off and voila - a necklace is born., and a one of a kind one too. So if you like to be unique, enjoy antiques, and prefer to stand out from the herd, this one may suit you. If you have Scottish heritage, the thistles are a match too.
