Antique Victorian Reverse Cut Glass Cobalt Blue Flower Bouquet Cameo Sterling Brooch

This is a gorgeous antique Victorian period reverse cut glass cobalt blue flower bouquet cameo brooch is an elegant sterling silver setting. This technique is more properly called a reverse intaglio than a cameo, but holds appeal for cameo collectors as well. The flower design has been carved into the back side leaving the front face smooth. Selective areas of the flowers were treated with silver highlights, and the remainder of the flowers were etched to give a frosted appearance. I think that it was then backed with cobalt blue foil to set off the design. The whole was then placed into an attractive sterling silver setting with a simple collet bezel framed by a decorative scalloped and engraved border. The reverse has the original pin stem with C clasp and extra wide T hinge clasp. The flat portion of the back appears to be copper. There are no markings, but the setting tests positive for silver content of sterling grade.

This brooch weighs 10.3 gr. It measures 1.75" x 1.375".

Condition is good. No defects found.

This unusual brooch is a remarkable survivor from the mid 1800s. The combination of superb workmanship, excellent design, and the brilliant play of color between the vivid blue and soft frosted white of the flowers make for an exceptional piece.
