Scottish Victorian Malachite, Lapis, Gold Stone Pietra Dura Brooch

This is a wonderful example of Scottish Victorian period pietra dura or mixed stone inlay such as malachite, lapis, gold stone, agate, and in a black stone base with brooch back. The inlay is arranged in a target like design with concentric rings and a geometric flower pattern in the center. Some of the stones looks like fossilized specimens. The back is fitted with a simple old fashioned T hinged pin stem and C clasp.

This brooch measures 1.875" in diameter.

Condition: There are 2 chips out of the back of the brooch. Only a tiny bit of the smaller chip is at all visible from the front.

I think this would be considered a specimen brooch, with interesting examples of several types of unusual stones. Collecting and displaying natural specimens was very popular during the Victorian period.
