This uncommon antique Victorian period jet set brooch features a finely carved slab of mother of pearl depicting St. John the Baptist holding a lamb, aka the Lamb of God or Agnus Dei. The phrase Lamb of God appears in the Gospel of John, when John the Baptist exclaims upon seeing Jesus: "Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world". This beautiful carving shows haloed John as a young boy wrapped in a fleece tunic embracing a lamb. The mother of pearl is beautifully carved and has a fine opalescent iridescence. It is set against a plain round slab of natural Whitby jet. The back has a simple brass plate with an old fashioned T hinged pin stem and C clasp.
This brooch measures 1.75" in diameter and is .25" thick.
Condition is good.
This remarkable brooch is of exceptionally high craftsmanship and the image is especially endearing.
