Antique Victorian Pyrite Fools Gold Brooch

This is a conversation starting antique Victorian period pyrite fools gold brooch. This round brooch is composed of 3 concentric circles, each filled with expanding circles filled with pyrite stones. The center circle holds a single larger stone almost .5" (12mm) in diameter. The next ring contains 10 stones each about 5mm in diameter. The outer ring has 14 stones each about .25" (7mm) in diameter. The stones are held within silver colored metal collet settings, perhaps very low silver content but I will just call it silver base metal. The back is brass and has an old fashioned pin stem with wide T hinge and C clasp.

This brooch measures 1.625" in diameter.

Condition is a bit rough. Pyrite is a fragile stone and there appears to be 2 stones in the outer ring that are cracked. The settings of these 2 stones are slightly indented as well. One of the smaller stones in the next ring has some corrosion. Pyrite is high in iron content so this may be the reason. I haven't tried to clean this area.

Despite these flaws this brooch is a very large example of its type. Pyrite jewelry was quite popular during the Victorian period. The stone is purported to have certain mystical powers as well.
