This is a beautiful antique Victorian period painted porcelain gold filled brooch depicting a classical Greek lady holding a cup. The woman is dressed in a draped white robe with gold accents. Her hair is worn up with a scarf through it. She appears to be standing before a grape vine trellis and is lifting her right arm to pick grapes and fill her cup. The figure is enhanced by a decorative gold edging and a plain dark purple border. It is set within a simple deep collet setting with an attractive swag and ball embellishment around the perimeter. The setting is unmarked. The metal tests as gold filled. The brooch has a simple T hinged pin stem and C clasp, plus a short safety chain with pin. The porcelain is marked on the back with raised numbers 5898 over 50.
This brooch measures 2.25" in diameter.
Condition is good. There is only very minor wear to the painted porcelain visible under magnification.
I believe that the image of the Grecian lady is a transfer image, but it has been further decorated by hand painted details in the clothing and gold trim. It is a very elegant large antique brooch.
