Here is a gorgeous old world style Santa Claus! This is all hand carved wood and is hand painted by a Russian artist. The front of his suit is decorated with an image of Santa trimming the Christmas tree. He has a small Christmas tree staff in one hand and his bag is over his shoulder. The bag is decorated with lots of snow-covered cottages and trees. The sculpture is 9 3/4" tall and the base is 3 ¾" x 5 ½". It has artist signature on the bottom.

The Feast of St. Nicholas on December 6th was observed in Russia for centuries and St. Nicholas was known as Father Christmas. After the communist revolution, the celebration of the feast was prohibited, and St. Nicholas was transformed into "Ded Moroz", or Grandfather Frost, the Russian Spirit of Winter who brings gifts to children on Christmas Day.
