Charles Adrian Rutherford was born in Mill Valley, California on November 4, 1868. Artistically inclined from an early age, he studied locally with Chris Jorgensen. At age 19 he received recognition from the German Kaiser for one of his paintings. While a resident of San Francisco in 1889-1927, he made many painting excursions to the surrounding countryside. His portrait of Peter Lassen was used to illustrate a book called King Ship of Mount Lassen (author: Mrs. Frederick H. Colburn, 1922). Although he was known to have painted landscapes and portraits, he specialized in still lifes of grapes, many of which were done at the Moulton Hill Vineyard near Cloverdale. He died in Mill Valley on January 11, 1944.
