Antique Watercolored Engraving of Shells - Circa 1720 - 1760

This is a nicely colored engraving of shells from Knorr's "Delights for the Eyes and the Spirit, or a General Collection of the Different Species of Shells the the Sea Contains" This engraving is after the drawing of J.C. Keller and is engraved by Johann Adam Joninger, circa 1720 - 1760.

The title of this engraving is "Ex Museo Miileriano". The art is 8 x 6 inches. The framing is modern. It is double matted and the backing and hinging is acid free material. The conservation glass blocks 98% of the UV rays. The wood frame has a dark silver tone finish and is 14 1/2 x 12 3/4 inches. This is in very good condition.

Printed in the upper left corner is P.IV. and in the upper right corner is XIX***. Each shell or specimen is numbered 1 through 5. Printed at the bottom is the title - Ex Museo Mulleriano. On the bottom right is J.C. Keller ad nat. pinxit. which means that Keller did the drawing or painting that this engraving was done from. Printed in the lower right is J.A. Joninger Sculps. which means that Joninger was the actual engraver for this work of art.

Many of the specimens in this engraving came from famous Amsterdam collector's cabinets. The artist's renderings are notable for their precision and delicacy, continuing in the tradition of scientific illustration.

This particular work of art was included in the show, "The Art of Science, Illustrations of the Natural World: 1750 - 1900" which was held at the NC Aquarium from July to September 2009.
