What an interesting and unusual piece this is, found just this last weekend here in the heart of farm country. This mallet, which measures 13 ¾" long, is embossed on both sides of the iron head, but unfortunately, it is for the most part unreadable. It appears that on one side, it looks like the numbers "1890" which would be about right for the date on this piece.
Weighing just under 2 lbs., this early mallet shows wear from age and use. It appears that both flat sides are wood, and the iron covers the wooden block interior. The heavy iron head is solidly attached to the handle. This wonderful old mallet would make a great display in your country cupboard or early vintage tool collection!
