Old Oil Lamp
This old lamp made of forged iron and brass was designed to burn oil of some type - possibly whale oil. The back support is of Blacksmith type work and as primitive as it looks it actually has sort of a fancy design on it. There is a hook at the top that this would hang from and two lower pans of beaten brass to hold the oil. On the back of this iron strap is two notches for the near star shaped pan to hang and this apparently is adjustable as evident by the two slots. These type lamps were seen in use during the mid to late 1700's and are referred to as "Betty Lamps" - this one is a "Double Betty" . Overall height is 9 1/2 inches and the bottom pan measures 4 1/2 inches across.
