Antique Porcelain Veilleuse-Theieres Nightlight Candle Holder

This unusual item is an antique porcelain Veilleuse-Theieres. These were used to hold a candle and they functioned as a nightlight and tea warmer. It dates to around 1850 and it is most likely from Germany or Austria. The story is that these became popular because Napoleon didn't like to sleep in the dark and started using them in his tent.

This one is beautifully decorated with what I was told are scenes from Hamlet. It has a stained glass design surrounding the scenes which would certainly be beautiful when illuminated. The quality of the decoration is exceptional. In my Favorite Links there is a link to a website for a museum in Trenton that has a large collection of these. On the first page of pictures there is one that has a similar, Shakespeare themed design.

This one does not have a teapot. I was told by an appraiser that it might not have had one originally. It is in excellent condition with no chips cracks or repairs. It is about 8 inches tall and about 6 inches across the top.
