Mintons Sepia and Buff Watteau Tile, 3 Children, ca. 1880 Staffordshire
This tile was produced by Mintons and it is one of a series of scenes in the style of Jean-Antoine Watteau. Watteau was an 18th century French painter, who is credited with the invention of a new genre of painting, depicting idyllic and pastoral scenes with a theatrical flair. This tile certainly fits that description! It features 3 children in a park-like setting, at the edge of a stream or lake. They hold fruit and flowers and the fancy scroll and curlicue border has a wonderful Rococo flair. It is offered in a hard to find sepia on buff color combination. The Watteau series was the first pictorial series offered by Mintons China Works and it proved to be extremely popular.
It is marked "Mintons China Works Stoke on Trent" and measures about 6" square and about ½" thick.
Very Good Condition: minor crazing, a few tiny pin-dot size nicks around the rim on both the front and back edges. There are no cracks or large chips.
This is an attractive and popular series of tiles by Mintons and it is a handsome color combination. It is a terrific example and it would be a beautiful addition to a collection! This is a super opportunity to purchase a gift or to add to a collection, so don't miss out! We are always offering a nice selection of vintage goodies, so please take a look through our shop. We would be pleased to combine shipping on multiple purchases.
