Tiny Blue Corn San Ildefonso Pueblo Pot with Black on Black Glaze
Born in 1921 at San Ildefonso Pueblo, near Santa Fe, NM, Blue Corn lived in California for a while, then settled back at San Ildefonso Pueblo after marrying. She had a huge influence on the pottery industry in the area and shares credit for reviving its popularity. Blue Corn received more than 60 awards both posthumously and during her lifetime. Her work is exhibited in prestigious collections around the world, including the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. She died in 1999 and was also known as Crucita Calabaza.
This is a tiny, classically shaped pot in her famous Black on Black glaze. It has a flat foot with a slight flare to the side walls and a rounded rim. The glaze on this piece is a rich low-sheen black with scattered specks that resemble grains of white sand. The rim decoration is a matte ring near the top and beautifully spaced half circles creating a swag effect below the ring. The hand work is evident when examining this pot, from the tiny differences between the swags and a slight indent in the clay on the side of the pot – perhaps a stray thumb is to blame.
It is marked with a hand-incised signature, "Blue Corn", followed by the words "San Ildefonso Pueblo".
It is a tiny 2 ¾" tall and measures almost 2 ¼" across the top and about 1 ½" across the bottom.
Excellent Condition: no cracks, age crazing, nicks or chips. There is a surface scrape on the foot and it is difficult to tell for sure, but it appears to be from sticking to the shelf in the kiln.
