A Victorian 9ct Gold Cased Onyx Cameo Mourning Brooch. Circa 1850.

A Victorian mourning brooch. The obverse set with an onyx cameo carved with forget-me-nots, surrounded by black enamel, the whole set in a 9ct gold cased frame. The reverse set with a glass locket containing plaited hair. With later attached safety chain. Circa 1850. Measurements, north to south 1 1/4", west to east 1 5/8". Condition, good, a split to the gold case at the pin hinge, and a very small chip to the black enamel. The gold casing has been acid tested as 9ct gold ( gold casing was a technique popular in the manufacture of this type of brooch, where a gold sheet was applied to a base metal core )An interesting mourning brooch,set with a good onyx cameo.
