An Early Victorian Mourning Brooch. Circa 1840.

An early Victorian mourning brooch. Cartouche shaped, made of 9ct cased gold. The obverse centred with a black enamelled plaque set with a diamond set forget-me-not surrounded by seed pearls. The main body of the obverse of black champleve enamel with the words ' In Memory Of ' surrounded by a repousse work scrolls. The plain reverse set with a glazed compartment containing plaited hair. Attached ring to top for securing a safety chain. Circa 1840. Measurements, length 2 1/4" ( 5.8 cm ), width 1 7/8" ( 4.9 cm ), depth ( excluding pin ) 9/16" ( 1.4 cm ). Condition, Very Good, some chipping to the enamel at the bottom of the letter M. A nice example of an early Victorian mourning brooch of a good size.
