Amazing French Victorian Globe de Mariee Wedding Display Stand & Dome
This is the first piece I have had like this!
This is a beautiful and unique turn-of-the-century French wedding display stand, sometimes called Portuguese crowns (reason unknown). They were used to display the bride and groom's wedding rings...and sometimes, crowns. The pieces that you generally see, have more flowers, birds, and mirrors, sweeping up the back from the cushion. The wire legs are stapled to a wood platform, the piece is surrounded by wax flowers, and covered with a large glass dome.
This piece is quite unique in a couple of ways. It never had a back to it, and it is the first one I have seen with these fabulous ruby red colored faux jewel crystals.
This piece is all brass and measures 9-1/2" wide x 9-1/4" high. The display cushion measures 8" wide. The cushions were pin tucked and most commonly red velvet. On rare occasions, blue. There was nothing left of the red velvet, so I recovered the cushion in black velvet, using the original floral pins. I used the original cushion mold which has fabulous old French newsprint on the underside. I used a tiny bit of glue, just to make sure that the pins do not come loose.
The cushion is framed in a brass band, and the front is done an amazing array of detailed brass flowers on individual wires. Accenting the center of some of these pieces are hand prong set 5/8" ruby colored faux jewel crystals.
At the center is the original beveled oval glass mirror, dog tooth set in brass and measuring 4" wide x 3-1/4".
This piece is supported on four brass wire legs.
With the exception of a little bit of verde in a couple of places on the brass and a very faint streaking in the mirror, which is to be expected on a piece of this age, this piece is in exceptional and excellent condition.
This piece is displayed on a black round wood base measuring 12" across, and covered by a tall glass dome, measuring 10" wide x 15" high. These are not the original dome and base, but fit the piece nicely. The dome has a single soft etched along the back of the come which is not seen from the front. This is a very thin vintage dome, so for it's age, this is not unusual.
What else can I say?...This piece is fabulous!
