This is an absolutely beautiful antique charger plate from the Kloster Vessra (Vessra Monastery) porcelain factory in Thuringia, Germany. It dates to the very late 1800's to 1921. The lovely gilded rim frames this completely hand painted charger. The creamy white porcelain background is adorned by deep rose to light pink petaled pink poppies and foliage. I tried to take good close up pictures to show the talent of the artist who painted this piece.
Kloster Vessra is an historic monastery in the state of Thuringia in Germany. From the 1600s forward, the monks produced iron chains and cuffs, then strangely, porcelain. I imagine that was in response and competition with the Schlegelmilch family and other porcelain factories located within Thuringia. The orange-y gold mark is mysterious, but I believe was based on the monastery's desire to set itself apart from the competition (RS Prussia) but yet remain muted in keeping with the monastery's understated simplistic lifestyle. Their pieces seem to feature soft pastels.
MARK: The mark is VERY German. The English translation is: P V stands for Porcelain Factory Kloster Vessra (later associated with Bofinger & Co. of Saxony, Germany) and was used from 1892 to 1921. The charger is backstamped with a castle entrance, P V Vessra, Handpainted, Germany.
SIZE: This larger charge measures 12" in diameter.
CONDITION: This charger is in beautiful antique condition. There are no chips, cracks or crazing. There is slight wear to the gilded edge as shown in the pictures.
