This amazing large cameo is probably unique. I have never seen another remotely similar.
Measuring 3 and 5/8 inches wide by 2 and 7/16 inches at the tallest part, it is a detailed depiction of the Holy Family's flight into Egypt to escape the edict of King Herod to kill all newborn babies.
Mary holds baby Jesus as she rides a donkey, and Joseph walks beside them. The high points of the carving retain a thin layer of the darker, peach-colored shell; this highlights the figures and lends an extra depth to the scene. Palm trees frame the scene on left and right. Most rare is the depiction of an Egyptian pyramid in the left background. Circa 1880.
The frame is some carat of gold (the color is a deep yellow gold, suggesting 18 carat), but there are no marks and it has not been tested. Simple C-shaped pin back. Ring at top on back for safety chain and pin, which is missing but could be added easily by any jeweler if deemed necessary.
As a cameo for Christmas activities or any religious occasion, this one is simply magnificent!
