The original finish on this piece is in very good condition. The traditional use of Black painted moldings along with incised carvings filled with gilt accents is the trademark of the Renaissance Revival style of the 1870's thru the 1890's. Burled placards, Inlaid medallion at the top, Carved swags, and the carved paw feet are all part of the hand finishing that this piece used. The drawer in the bottom also has hand dovetails. Old cracks and breaks, like the one on the top crest are older repairs that chronicle it's history. The main mirror is starting to loose it's silver and does have a blemish in the center. Certainly replaceable, if required. The marble top is in excellent condition with a good degree of luster evident and no chips, cracks or stains. We have never removed the mirror backing to see if there is a maker's name. There is none evident elsewhere.
