Grandville Victorian Engraving 'Eglantine' 1867 from Les Fleurs Animees.

This fine original engraving is by renowned French caricature artist JJ Grandville and was edited and published in 1867 by Garnier Freres, Paris.

From his Les Fleurs Animees series it is entitled 'Eglantine' (Wild Sweet Briar).. the first and most common of the rose family, growing along hedgerows right across Europe.

It depicts a lovely young maiden in the guise of the rose. She wears a dress of twining thorny vines and buds, and has a necklace and bracelet of rose hips. Her hair and bodice are adorned with the beautiful flowers.

Signed in the plate Grandville del and Ch. Geoffroy sc. this is an original hand colored engraving from 1867 and NOT a modern reprint.

Measuring 6" x 10 3/4" this engraving has been slightly trimmed and has a tiny corner loss upper right and some age discoloration lower left which will frame out. The Antique condition is good.

As with all Grandville pieces the colors are just gorgeous.

JJ Grandville was born Jean Ignace Isador Gerard (1803-47) and I have more of his wonderful engravings in my shop.
