This is the second stunning postcard by Swiss Symbolist painter Arnold Bocklin (1827-1901) I am listing today.
Although he never officially gave his works a title, preferring to leave the interpretation up to the viewer, this one has the caption 'Die Nereide' (The Nereide) and is best known as Triton and Nereid.
Featuring Triton with a naked sea nymph, he blows his shell horn as a warning while the nymph communes with a huge sea monster.
Painted in 1870 and worth many millions of dollars, the original painting was recently the subject of an art theft in Dusseldorf. The painting was safely recovered.
Issued by verlag F Bruckmann, Munchen and postally un-used it has some upper corner losses and is in fair condition.
