Stamped and unreadably franked, and sent to an address in Gruz, Austria, this unique early postcard is by Polish/Russian Symbolist artist Wilhelm Kotarbinski (1849-1922).
Entitled 'Kuss der Welle' (Kiss in the Waves) it features a drowning man being brought ashore by a siren of the sea. She is giving him the kiss of life. Behind them a storm rages as the waves crash onto the shore.
Signed lower left there is no publisher detail and it is numbered R 57. It has a German military censorship (Zensuriert) stamp verso, which along with the cost of the stamp (5 Heller) dates it to 1914-1918 WW1.
With minor corner bumps it is in good condition.
