Another rare original French lithograph capturing a hauntingly beautiful woman in true Art Nouveau style.
Entitled 'Invocation a la Madonna d'Onyx Vert' it is by French Symbolist Jules Marcel-Lenoir (1872-1931). It was part of limited edition (1050) L'Estampe Moderne series issue #3 in July 1897.
L'Estampe Moderne (the modern poster) series was at the forefront of a craze for poster collecting that swept Europe in the late 1890's. Issuing 4 unique posters every month in a binding by Alphonse Mucha, from 1897-99. See picture #3. Printed by Champenois Paris they originally cost 3 francs 50 centimes.
Using Catholic Symbolism and featuring a beautiful model to represent the Madonna with her rosary, it successfully incorporates mysticism and allegory.
The lithographic poster was one of the defining artistic advances of the latter part of the 19th Century.
This is one of the very rare L'Estampe Moderne lithographs which have become so popular recently that they are no longer available on the world market.
Signed in the plate lower right and bearing the official 'blind' stamp of authenticity lower right. See picture #2. Measuring 15 1/2" x 11 1/2" the condition is excellent with no marks, tears or creases.
The L'Estampe Moderne cover (picture #3) is included for authentication only and is not for sale.
