This gorgeous early 20th Century Italian postcard is by French artist William Bougereau (1825-1905).
In his long career, Bougereua completed more than 800 works. This is one of his most famous paintings..'Psyche and Cupid(Eros)'. Sometimes known as The First Kiss.
It depicts the God Eros descending from heaven to win the hand and heart of Psyche.
In Greek mythology Psyche was a mortal princess and believed to be the earthly manifestation of Aphrodite, Goddess of Love and Beauty. Aphrodite was infuriated by this and sent her son Eros to cast a spell on Psyche. The plan backfired as Eros fell in love with Psyche and manipulated the Oracle at Delphi to convince her parents that her future husband would be a winged creature whose face she would never be able to see. The God Zeus united the couple in wedlock and made Psyche immortal. Her ascendance into heaven made mankind rejoice that one of their own had become a Goddess.
William Bougereau was a highly successful 19th Century painter who was regarded by his contemporaries, Monet and Degas, as the greatest painter of the period, and his mythologically themed paintings sold for huge prices, especially in America. After his death he went out of fashion.
Postally un-used and in good condition with minor edge and corner knocks, this Italian postcard is issued by proprieta artistica riservata, Milano. Numbered 2670 it bears the imprint of Mona Lisa verso. Unsigned, it is incorrectly attributed to Italian artist, G Franzini.
