This arresting and rare Original Art Nouveau Lithograph is by French academic painter Alfred-Pierre Agache ~1834-1915~ and is part of L'Estampe Moderne series.
The lithographic poster was one of the defining artistic advances of the latter part of the 19th Century, when a craze for collecting posters swept Europe.
L'Estampe Moderne (The Modern Poster) was at the forefront, Issuing 4 unique posters in a binding by Alphonse Mucha every month from 1897-1899. For the princely sum of 3 francs 50 centimes.
This exquisite and very rare Lithograph was previously unpublished and created especially for the series. It is one of a Very Limited DeLuxe Edition of only 150 prints. See picture #5.
Titled 'Imperia' it depicts a beautiful young woman wearing a black tulle hat trimmed with flowers and leaves and a belted deep burgundy velvet dress and shawl.
As with all lithographs from this series the colors are divine.
History tells us little about Alfred-Pierre Agache. He specialized in portraits and was a contemporary and friend of famed American painter James McNeill Whistler. Most of his works were of unnamed sitters and my research could not put a name to this lovely lady.
The title 'Imperia' refers to a short story by Balzac "La Belle Imperia" about a well educated Italian courtesan named Lucrezia de Paris.
Unsigned, it is in fair Antique condition with no tears and minor age discoloration to the margins. There are some creases upper right corner and central mostly in the right hand margin, and album marks across the lower half where I assume it has been stored for more than a century. There are also 4 small remnants of backing paper on each corner verso, consistent with holding the lithograph in place in an album. These do not affect the front.
The creasing and album marks are taken into consideration in the pricing, and will very likely frame 'out'. Please contact me via email if you would like more photographs.
The measurement is 15 1/2" x 11 1/2".
It was printed by Imprimerie Champenoise~Paris, and carries the official 'blind' stamp in the lower right hand corner. See picture #4
The great Museums and Art Galleries of the world have been collecting L'Estampe Moderne series for the past few years making them very difficult now to obtain. Especially in good condition. My research shows this one to be particularly rare.
Picture #6 shows a typical cover from L'Estampe Moderne series and is included for purposes of authenticity only and is not for sale.
