This vintage late 1930's wool hook rug, primitive hand made, features a sweet house in the country, nestled between two large deciduous trees, as well as bushes, grass, and flowers popping up in the foreground, in magnified size, in orange, two-tone blue and red-pink. A curvy walkway winds its way up from the from the flowers at the bottom of the rug to the doorway of the little house with shutters and two chimneys. The scene is contained in an oval shape with chocolate brown to fill in the rest of this rectangular rug.
It's more unusual to find a home & landscape design like this one...most of the old hook rugs I've found were only floral in nature or featured animals. This one is so delightfully hearth and home.
Rug measures nearly 3 feet X 2 feet at 33" inches wide X 24" inches tall. Rug itself weighs 1 pound, 12 ounces. Blue & white ticking fabric loops on the back of rug indicate it was formerly hung ornamentally on a wall. Properly bound with binding tape or sturdy vintage fabric, this will be a lovely, warm rug for a cozy room or a wonderful wall hanging again!
Condition: Minor frayed edges of burlap and wool - rest of rug totally intact. Colors still fairly vibrant; lovely reds, blues, orange, greens; very good to excellent condition. Needs minor repair and binding.
NOTE: Back in the day (Colonial times up through the 1940's) women made hooked rugs out of old burlap sacks. They were recycling LONG before it was "in" or "politically correct"...It was just LIFE ! That's one reason you see so many vintage rugs of the same approximate size...they used up those burlap feed sacks!
