This exquisite sterling silver and dragon's breath art glass parure was hand wrought in Mexico, vintage 1930's to mid 1940's, by a well documented silver artist who signed his pieces "HSP". This fabulous set is well crafted in a nature motif that is art nouveau in appearance with the curvy calla lily flowers.
The necklace has a gorgeous center pendant (3" long and 2-1/2" wide) that is nicely detailed; the center has two spectacular fiery foil art glass cabochons, oval in shape and red in hue with gold and purple highlights (has the appearance of dragon's breath stone), that is prong set and surrounded with ornate silver scroll work.
There are three-dimensional, sculptural sterling silver calla lilies that frame the center art glass cabochons on the necklace, as well as on the bracelet. There are two lengths of "woven" sterling chain maille that complete the necklace and bracelet. The clasps on the necklace and bracelet are a tongue and box closure that work perfectly and close with a crisp 'click'. The matching earrings duplicate the beautiful work of the necklace, with fine working screw backs. The silver has acquired a wonderful, soft patina that reflects the shadows created by the depth of the designs.
Necklace's wearable length is 15.75" inches and center drop is 2.5" inches long, and weight is 87 grams. Bracelet has a wearable length of 7 5/8" inches and it is 1.25" inches at its widest point. Earring length is 2" inches and they weigh 15.6 grams. All pieces are in excellent condition.
Necklace and bracelet are hallmarked, "HECHO EN MEXICO, HSP, 09". Artist "HSP" and this hallmark are shown on page 231 in Bille Hougart's highly respected source book, The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks (2006 edition). Please note that there is no Eagle assay mark associated with this artist, so all of their jewelry was crafted prior to 1948, when the Mexican government mandated the Eagle assay marking system for silver.
